A colleagues new pc with XP didnt have an autoexe.bat
file. Thought an autoexe.bat is required or is it
optional?

That is with the windows 9x DOS based operating systems. Not required with
XP.

WinXP uses autoexec.nt located in the Windows/system32
folder.

Hope this helps!

It's not needed in WinXP.

It was never required in any version of Windows or MS-DOS. It was
always optional. But in Windows XP, it's not optional; it's not
used at all.

Early versions of MS-DOS would always prompt you for the Date and Time
at startup if there was no autoexec.bat

So if you wanted a fully automatic startup in DOS it was necessary to
at least have the file present.
