Autocorrection & Registry (Word 2003 or Word XP)

R

richard s.

I can't find the path in the registry specified for ACL-
files.
Ive read the KB-article 822005 (Word 2003) which states
that the location of the user.acl-file is specified in
the registry. I've also read the news in
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/exportautocorrect.
htm in which is stated that the information the registry
entry gives (as far as Word 2000 is concerned) is wrong!
Our current OS = WinXP.
I want to change the location of this file in the
registry - we work with roaming profiles. But I first
need to know where it's specified in the registry. Who
can help me?
If you don'n know for Word 2003 but you do know the
settings for Word XP - youre also invited to reply!

Hi Richard,

Typically this means a paragraph in the selection does not have the
same manual tabs set. If the manual tab stops for all selected
paragraphs is the same then they should appear black.

Hi Richard,

As of Office XP there is no longer one *.acl file. AutoCorrect entries
are now language specific. If I'm not mistaken Word will look to the
User Profile under <UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Office to
obtain the specific *.acl file.

I searched my registry for .acl and came up with
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office XP\OFFICE11\1033\MSO.ACL
and
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 2003\OFFICE11\3082\MSO.ACL

in a number of keys. (I think less than 10 but didn't count.) Don't know if
that is of help to you. I'm not sure that MSO.ACL is my Office 2003
autocorrect entry or not. I installed Office 2003 over XP on this computer
which may explain the different values.

The keys are long strings of hex numbers that may identify users.

You may want to do a similar search and then do a search / replace for the
string that you find, replacing it with the location you want. Do a complete
registry backup first!

Ummm... the "long string of hex numbers" is the Office 2003 GUID.

They are for the default AutoCorrect entry files for English and
Spanish. If the user *.acl file is missing or corrupt then the path
provided is where the Windows Installer will look to recreate the
*.acl file.

I wouldn't recommend modifying the paths in the Registry.

Beth,

Thank you for the correction. I should have known I was in over my head.

Hi Charles,

No worries. :)

As a general rule: Anything under
HKLM\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer is off limits. ;-)

However in this case if the path is changed I believe Office will
self-repair. At least it does if you delete one of the MSO.acl files.

Thanx Charles for your contribution. But I'm still
wondering
a. what was (or were) the name(s) of the registry-key of
the path containing the MSO.ACL-files?
And b.
if I haven't that key - am I simply allowed to add the key
and path?
Remember: first add a simple test-entry to the
autocorrection-list, and confirm this is the right ACL-
file. (You can open the file in Notepad and find the new
entry).

Am looking forward to your reply... / richard s.

Thanx for your contribution Beth. But I still don't know
where in the registry it's specified ???
What Key should there be? And is this pointing to the
right, just altered ACL-file?

I'm looking forward to your reply. / greetings richard s.

Hi Richard,

As I previously noted I believe Office looks to the user's profile for
this information. I'm not 100% certain of this since I do not have a
means of testing it on roaming profiles but it should be easy enough
to check out. First check to see if the *.acl files are present in the
profile, then add a custom AutoCorrect entry and log on to another
workstation and see if it is present.

Please let us know what you find. :)
