Autocorrect across documents

G

Guest

Hi All
In one doc I have added a number of AC entries eg 'sql' to autocorrect to
'Squadron Leader' and it works well. Open other documents and it doesn't work
and not present in list. Some other entries I have added are present though.
Only 1 copy of Normal.dot present (through XP search)
Why won't it AC across doc's?

Your autocorrects are kept in a file with the extension "acl". Where its
folder is located depends on the name of the user when logging on to
Windows. In Word 2000, Documents and Settings/ windows "sign on name"/
application data/ Microsoft/ Office. In many cases it is MSO1033.acl"
There is a different "acl" file for each user of the computer who has his
own logon name.

"Autotexts" are different.

Hi All
Thanks for your reply, Gil.
I only have 1 user sign on and in the directory you mentioned I have 3 .acl
files. (Aussie style dates ie dd/mm/yyyy)
MSO 1031.acl (1 kb) 27/6/2006
MSO 1033.acl (37 kb) 7/10/2006
MSO 3081.acl (36 kb) 9/10/2006

Should I delete (or rename just in case) MSO 1031 & 3081 as I suspect the
main file I require is the 1033 file. Is it normal for new .acl files to
occur i.e. the 3081 being only 2 days later?
There is an MSO.ACL file in c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033
17/5/2000 which I gather is the template file for the others. There are no
others.

Hi Gil
Understand auto texts but the autocorrect suits my 'shorthand' better. I was
under the impression that AutoCorrect spans any Office program that I use
under my login for basically any document.

AutoCorrect entries are stored by language. I suspect you had a different
language (different flavor of English perhaps) in effect when you created
some of the entries. The entries available to you will depend (to some
extent) on the language in effect at the insertion point.

Hi Suzanne
I hadn't changed a language until today which may account for the 3081.acl.
I was English (U.S.) then changed to English (Australia) after reading a few
blogs here. I just changed back to the US language and the AC's are there.
Why, though, would it change prior to me changing languages initially?
Thanks for help

AutoCorrect does work across Office apps but Word has more language
flexibility and extra formatted options. Most, if not all, other apps work
only in the language of the OS so if you have Windows XP set up for
Australian English then Excel, say, will use the Australian English
AutoCorrect file only (3081 is the language code for Australian English,
1033 the one for US English). Word uses the AutoCorrect file for the
language designated for the text at the cursor position and may use many
files in a single document. If you use a new language Word will create a new
ACL file if one doesn't exist although the initial contents of that file
will be minimal for languages other than variants of English, French, and
Spanish (if you have an English version of Word - the actual languages vary
depending on your version).

To use AutoCorrects from Word in other apps you must ensure that they are
(a) plain text and (b) in your default OS language - you can see the
language in the status bar and also in the title of the Word AutoCorrect
dialog.

Thanks for that, Tony. I'd never noticed that in the title bar before.
