I want delete the names in the autocomplete file and
start over given a number of the the email addresses in
it are old and no longer valid. How can I do this?

Remove individual addresses from the autocompletion cache by highlighting
the entry when presented in the suggested names list (use your arrow key to
migrate to the entry) and then hitting your Delete key before you tab out of
the field. To clear the entire cache, follow the instructions here:

Turn on advanced search options, select system and hidden folders also.
Then search for and erase a file called outlook.nk2. This is where the
info. is stored. Or, just rename it to old or something. Outlook will
create a fresh, new nk2 file.

There is also an NK2 file editor at www.dcs-imaging.com/products.htm called
Owtlook. It has full editing cability.
