Autocomplete Question

G

Gary

I have a Windows XP machine that is used for work. The XP Professional
installation, in this case IE, has been modified so that autocomplete is
disabled for forms and user names and passwords. (As I work out of my house
I am not concerned about this as a security issue). These choices are grayed
out in Internet Options, Content, Autocomplete Options. I did some searches
on the knowledge base from Microsoft and found the registry settings to
enable it, but, it is still dimmed where I cannot select this option. I
believe at this point it is a policy setting but have not been successful in
finding where I might re-enable these features.

Has anyone else had an issue like this? If so, short of reloading this
machine is there something I missed in either the registry or maybe some
direction on making a change to the policy settings?

Thanks,

-Gary

Hello Gary,

Thank you for posting in the Windows XP VAP newsgroup!

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: You found that
autocomplete for forms and user names and passwords are dimmed in IE
options. If I'm off base, please feel free to let me know.

There are 2 policies can disable autocomplete for forms and user names and
passwords. You can enable them by the following steps.
1. Open group policy with typing "gpedit.msc"
2. Disable "User configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows
Components\Internet Explorer\Disable AutoComplete for forms"
3. Disable "User configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows
Components\Internet Explorer\Do not allow AutoComplete to save passwords"

Please let me know if you have any other concerns, or need anything else.

Kenxl,

Thanks for you input, however, I could not find AutoComplete in the policy
editor.
Here is the structure that I found under User configuration\Administrative
Templates\WindowsComponents\Internet Explorer\

Internet Control Panel
Offline Pages
Browser Menus
Toolbars
Persistance Behaviors
Administrative Approved Controls
Security Features

What piece am I missing here?

Hello Gary,

Thanks for your reply.

Those items you listed are the subfolders of "User
configuration\Administrative Templates\WindowsComponents\Internet
Explorer\".
Please click the "Internet Explorer" on the left window of policy editor,
then you will find many policies and the above 7 folders at the right
window. You can find the two policies there.

Please let me know if you have any other concerns, or need anything else.

Kenxl,

That worked! I must have been a bit blind to not have seen those selections
in the right hand pane. I disabled both selections, rebooted, and went back
into IE. All the autcomplete functions are now available to me.

Thanks so much for your help.
