autocomplete/autoresolution

I'm using Outlook 2003 and I've migrated my contacts from earlier versions.
I have both 'Automatic name checking' and 'Suggest names while completing To,
CC, and Bcc fields' checked. I've read
http://www.ingressor.com/autocompletetips.htm. I have one profile called
Outlook which I believe is an NK2 file.

My problem is that I get either autocomplete or autoresolution (I don't know
which) to work on a few of my contacts but not on most of them. I cannot
recognize any pattern on which are recognized and which are not. I'm talking
about addresses that I've previously sent messages to. My questions are:

How can I tell if I'm using autocomplete or autoresolution when it does work?

How can I see if I have an aliase defined for a certain contact?

I think I'd prefer to use autoresolution and define my own aliases but how
do I define an aliase?

Is there anything else I should know about this?

When it doesn't work, click on Check Names on the menu and more suggestions
will come up. The Auto Complete feature is a dynamic list of previously used
addresses. Check Names uses your contacts list.
