Autochk.exe freezes during countdown

I mde a mistake by posting that chkdsk.exe freezes. I've since
learned that it's autochk.exe that freezes during the countdown. I
have to press any key BEFORE the countdown freezes in order to bypass
the chkdsk run. Otherwise, I have to reboot. Does anyone hve any
idea what could cause this?

Well, an update: I tried to run a diskcheck for errors on boot again
and, this time, autochk.exe ran to completion and chkdsk.exe started
and got to 36% of the first stage - then FROZE. I don't get it -
chkdsk works OK when I invoke it through the Microsoft Recovery
Console.
