Autoarchive Add-to or overwrite

I'm currious about the autoarchive feature.

is it additive (e.g. items archived "this time" are added to items that were
previously archived in the same archive file) or is a new PST created,
overwriting a previous one of the same name.

I would like to use autoarchiving if it is additive. I don't want to loose
stuff that I've previously archived but I don't want to be creating multiple
archive files (one for each archive time either).

The former.

You won't lose prior archived data. New items will be added to the existing
archive.
