Auto Update won't work

My pastor asked me to help him update his PC which has XP Home SP1. He
bought it recently new with bunches of software on it. He has never ran a
Windows Update. When it logs on his ISP, the little Globe saying updates
are available shows up next to clock. Well I click Start|All
Programs|Windows Update. It goes to the MS website and searches for latest
software for Windows Update. It runs a little then tells me there is
an error retrieving an update file. I then can't get SP2 or any updates.
He signs on with Administrative Rights but it doesn't ask for password or
say in User Accounts that he is password protected as it does on mine. I
have same OS and no problems installing SP2.

Any help or suggestions out there?

Willy:
Try clearing all his temp files from c:\Documents and
Settings\<hisprofile>\local settings\temp as well as local settings\temporary
internet files (cookies and all). That should insure that he is accessing
windows update with a clean slate. Also, if he is using dial up, try
connecting to windows update with a broadband connection. (windows updates
tend to be rather large, especially SP2). Additionally, check his browser
security settings under tools - internet options in Internet Explorer. Make
sure his security settings aren't so high that they are preventing the
installation of new windows update software. Finally, make sure he isn't
running any kind of software based firewall that could interfere (like
zonealarm, blackice, or norton internet security).

Geoff,
Thanks, I'll try these and let you know in next day or 2. He has nom
broadband, neither do I and I had no problem.

I'll give some of these a try when I go back over this coming week & will
post my results.

I tried all these, no help However, I noticed he had a Restore Data
Checkpoint back to 10/19/2004 and Restore PC to that point then ran Windows
Update and it ran. Now that is weird but thanks for your help
anyway............Bill
