Auto-Update never ends

Well this sucks. For the past year my Win XP has been auto-updating itself
without any headaches.

Now for the past few days it always wants to install the update indicated
below ***. It says it downloads and installs it successfully, but then
minutes later, it wasnt to do it again!

Microsoft wants to charge me $35 dollars for asking what's the deal? What's
the deal with THAT?

Anyone know?

Thanks ahead.

To everyone who has pitched in on this thread ... hang in there, I'm
attempting to get someone from MS to check out this thread -

For now I'd suggest uninstalling the update from Add/Remove Programs in
the Control Panel.
When the update is offered to be installed again, uncheck the box next
to it and click OK, then put a check in the box next to " Do not notify
me ... "

In order to see the above dialogue Automatic Updates should be set to
either " Download the updates ... let me choose when to install them "
or " Notify me but don't automatically download or install them "

Right click My Computer on the Desktop or Start Menu, choose Properties.
Click the Automatic Updates tab to access the options.

OR, one can access Windows Update or MS Update and hide the update there.

You know what really sucks? How does one get in touch with Microsoft to
tell them this is happening to many people? On their help site they
identify my product as being bought with the computer, so it's go to Gateway
for help (laughing) or pay Microsoft $35 just to tell them they're idiots
and to give me back my $35.

I really hate this....

I just got off the phone with Microsoft (866) 727-2338.

After subjecting myself to an hour long convo they finally seem to
admit (although not too much) that the error is on their end. And that
doing things to my machine won't change this circumstance.

So I guess it's a wait and see thing?

They had me delete all the Registry entries related to that update, and
nada. Only after a good hour did he go and check further.

So I am confident that it is purely on their end, and once they fix it, it
will just disappear. Will post any replies I get here.

Ok, below is the reply I got from Microsoft, and it appears to have worked.
I say appears because:

- two of the 4 files they mentioned were not on my machine.
- the update does not appear in my Add/Remove programs, however when I look
online (Windows Update) it says I have it installed.
- as well, I no longer get the Update icon.

I am not posting this for EVERYONE to just use it, I make no warranties that
this works, or whatever. However there are people in these groups that know
a lot! I figure they can read it, know what these files do, etc. I figure
they might be able to read this, and figure out what this solution did.

As well, I say might because twice aftwards, I would swear that to shut down
my machine I had to say shutdown TWICE in a row. No longer, but I would
swear I had to.

Anyway, here it is.
