Hi,
your computer has been infected with the Blaster virus.
Start> Run, type "shutdown -a", and hit Enter.
That should halt the reboot.
Now enable firewall.

Blah blah blaster worm. I can't believe people STILL don't know about
it, but thanks to M$ for mass-marketing a swiss-cheese OS to the
unsuspecting and inattentive masses, I suppose it's to be eXPected.

Steve

Hmmm....... I have a some what opposite view on it. MS can make the os as
insecure or secure as they want, they designed it. You have the choice to
use it or not depending on if you think its secure or not secure enough
and/or what your software needs are. If you buy a product and don't take the
time to learn how to use it correctly, then its your fault when it blows up.
IMHO, if you can't take the time to learn to use the $1000 tool(not a toy)
you just bought, then you shouldn't be buying one. Sure MS had the
vulnerability and it did get exploited and that programming mistake was
MS's(as well as many others), but getting the blaster virus is the fault of
the ignorant computer user, especially when the story was in every modern
day media source for months on end. Once it was patched, the word on
firewalls were out, and av's had definitions, no one should have gotten it
again. But of course they do cause they don't know how to use the tool
correctly. At this point you can't blame ms anymore. Another reason why I
would love to see a mandatory test be taken by anyone wishing to purchase a
computer for the first time. If they pass the test, they get the priveledge
of buying and owning one. If they fail they need to learn more before being
allowed to buy one. Of course this will never happen and it would put me out
of business, but its still a dream........ ;o)

Well, I will have to amend my rant... No, I actually do NOT have a
choice unless my choice is to be unemployed. The same goes for all my
users. In the workplace we are FORCED to use Windows to get our work
done by powers beyond our control. The students in our schools are
FORCED to use Windows for similar reasons. The unsuspecting public on
the other hand, yes, you are correct, it is their choice to purchase and
use whatever product they choose. But I can still blame M$ for pushing
such an incomplete OS in the first place, and that is exactly what it is
off the shelf, incomplete. Even currently available brand new XP install
CDs do NOT have those holes plugged. If they were making cars instead of
software they'd be having to recall them.

I agree about the test idea. I don't think it would put you and me out
of business, though. We have actually implemented that to some degree in
our districct hiring process - interviewees need to demonstrate a
certain level of compute literacy in order to be considered for many
positions.

Steve

Ya I guess you make a good point. In business we are basicly forced into
using windows, you know how that argument goes, it can go back and forth for
ever, but the bottom line is yes there are other choices, but they don't
work for 90% of the people who would look into them, so yes we're forced
into it.
You also make a good point about shipping un-patched os. This is certainly
ms's fault. Something I didn't consider until you mentioned it. If something
like the blaster vulnerability comes up, ms should do the right thing and
recall all cd's at oems and in stores and ship new ones, at their expense.
Then after having a secure cd in stores and at oems if anyone gets the
blaster its then their own fault. So I guess it's both parties fault
equally. To bad all we can do about it is try to educate users. The ms
policies are out of our hands.

Guys, I was looking for a solution to my problem. But thanks for the
interesting exchange of views between the 2 of you.

SO CAN SOMEONE tell me how to fix it other than reformating?

Always run a firewall and anti-virus programs on your computer at all times.

You are infected with the Blaster worm virus.

To stop the rebooting/shutdowns, right click on the task bar, choose task
manager, processes tab, look for msblast.exe. Highlight it and click end
process. Then turn on the xp firewall.

To turn on the firewall: control panel, network and internet connections,
network connections, right click your connection, properties, advanced tab,
check the protect my computer box. Do this as quickly as you can once the
desktop comes up. Then visit the sites below for the removal and patch info.

Also make sure to follow the links to the Microsoft pages for the patch or
visit windows update for the patch after you remove it.
