We are running Exchange 5.5 & Outlook 2000. A rule was setup for an external
client that would auto reply to all messages sent to that mailbox. Auto reply
was turned off by mistake at the server. When turned back on the auto reply
works but only one time to the same requesting address. It used to work no
matter how many times the same person sent an e-mail. The auto reply will
work the next day to the same address again. It seems to be a one shot deal
per day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe it is supposed to work that way.

Suppose one of your users gets an e-mail while they are on holiday from an
automated source, they then send back an OOO. The automated source then send
an e-mail saying it is a mailbox that is not monitored, you then send back
an OOO etc etc etc. How full do you want your inbox to be ?

It will usually start again if the OOO is turned off and then back on.
