Auto recovery Save of Word document

I had a large and very important document that I had been printing from for
the past 8 months. At some point in the past week the computer rebooted and
the file was shut down improperly. I can not open it from the desktop. I also
had a bacup copy on cd. That won't open either. The message I get is "the
document name or path is invalid". I found a file called autorecovery save
of ...(document name).asd

It is labeled as an ASF Stream Description File. When I try to open that
Windows Media Encoder tries to open it and then I get the message "Unexpected
File Format"
Any ideas on what to do would be greatly appreciated.

The biggest mystery to me is why the copy on CD won't open.
