Auto-Play doesn't work on any device.

I am having a problem with the auto-play feature of Windows XP. Whenever I
insert any type of media (CD-Rom, DVD-Rom, USB Flash Drive) nothing happens.
I have gone threw the registry settings they all were correct (according to
several similar problems listed on the Microsoft Knowledgebase website),
uninstalled and reinstalled the hardware, loaded TweakUI and checked the auto
play features, I also have reset every single option in the auto play under
the drive properties. When I go into my computer and right click on the
drives and select auto play, the auto play feature then will do what it is
supposed to do. When I insert my USB Flash Drive I get an auto play pop-up
in the corner of my screen which looks like it is reading in the drive (I
would get this right before it would pop up the dialog to choose what I want
to do with the drive, like open, play, etc.). I have also inserted the media
into other machines and they do not have an auto play problem on those
machine.

I had manually made those changes to my registry, but I ran the registry
change anyway. I am still having a problem with the USB Flash Drives not
auto-running when they are plugging into a usb port.

Hi,

A very similar fix, you need to remove the upper and lower filters in the
registry class key that pertains to that device. This is the main key, you
will need to determine which subkey is correct:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\class

I don't see any listing for my USB Flash Drives in that main key. I just see
a listing for my USB Drives themself. Should I be looking for it under
something else?

Hi,

You should find it as a "USB Mass Storage Device" and it may well be a
subkey under the general USB key.

Ok I have found what you are talking about, I didn't realize what you meant.
I have found 5 listings for USB Mass Storage Device. What do you mean by
remove the upper and lower filters?

Hi,

Under those keys, you should see strings in the right pane called
upperfilters and lowerfilters. These are the ones you want to remove.

The only strings I have listed are DriverDate, DriverDateData, DriverDesc,
DriverFlags, DriverVersion, InfPath, InfSection, InfSectionExt,
MatchingDeviceID, ProviderName. All five listings are exactly the same. I
was a little surprised since I own several different Flash Drives made by
different companies and thought there would be at least some difference.

Hi,

Ok, then try just deleting those subkeys. Then reboot, when you reattach the
device you should be prompted anew on how the system should handle it.

Hi,

Sorry, but I don't have any further suggestions. Does it behave the same for
other accounts?

I don't have any other accounts on here, but I will create one and see if it
still happens.
