auto number increment is showing huge gap

The ID field in my 2003 customer database is showing that there is a huge gap
in the increment.Until now the sequence has been fine and nothing has been
changed in design view.Can anyone advise about what may have gone
wrong............I am led to believe however that this is not deemed to be
perfectly incremental but can it be put right?

Delete any records using the high numbers, and compact the database.

Why should you care?

Autonumbers are designed to provide unique numbers. It in not designed
to provide numbers in order and for a number of reasons may not do so. As a
result using them in any application where the user sees the numbers is
likely to end up with confusion.

There are other ways of providing the numbers you want depending on the
particual application.
