Please help, I have 6 laptops in the office which log onto a Wireles Router
in the office when the users come in : they get given a correct ipaddress.

I have purchased 2 new Winxp Hp Laptops - needless to say when they log onto
the Network they get given a strange IPaddress - and the Wireless icon has a
yellow exclamation mark saying limited or no connectivity.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Does the IP address begin 169?
If so, that's an APIPA IP. Check your wireless network security on the
router and new laptops and make sure that the password is OK along with the
level of security employed ie WEP or WPA. You may even have MAC filtering
on, meaning that the router will only allow certain MAC addresses in.

If Maincat's solution doesn't work, check your laptops aren't making their
own addresses:

1. Go to control panel.
2. Double Click on Network Connections.
3. Right Click Local Area Connection and select Properties.
4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP / IP). Select the text, not the checkbox.
5. Click properties.
6. Click on the radio button next to "Obtain an IP address automatically"
and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

Let me know if it works

By doing this I get the following result

IP : 169.254.235.215
SM : 255.255.0.0
DG : <BLANK>

Someone said to me the Winsocket should be upgraded to version 2.0 ? Is this
plausable ?

Many thanks again to you all !

Have you got your router to assign DHCP addresses automatically? If not, do
so.
