Auto-closing Document1 if not modified

In Word 2003, Document1 was automatically opened with Word, as is the case
with 2007. However, if you opened some other document without modifying
Document1, then Document1 was automatically closed. This doesn't happen in
2007, as Document1 stays open.

It's much more common for me to open existing documents than create new ones
when I open up Word, so is there any way for me to change an option to mirror
this feature of 2003? If that's not possible, how can I not open any document
went I start Word 2007?

Normally the behavior for Word 2007 is the same as that for 2003. I
vaguely recall reading in these newsgroups that there's some
third-party add-in that causes the untouched Document1 to hang around.
Unfortunately, Google has ditched about 99% of its newsgroup archives
and I can't locate the post now.

Anyway, try removing any add-ins you have. If that resolves the
problem, start replacing them one at a time and checking Word until
the problem returns; the last one added will be the culprit.

If you don't want to go through that, you can start Word without a
blank document by editing the Target line of a shortcut to WinWord.exe
to have a /n switch (see
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP101640101033.aspx).

I never installed any 'add-ins.' Plus there are none to 'manage' when I go
into the appropriate tab of 'Word Options.' Any other suggestions? (And
thanks for replying!)

Sorry, without my "backup brain" at Google, I'm not likely to stumble
across the answer unless one of my colleagues remembers it -- I'll ask
around.

Meanwhile, did you try the shortcut method I mentioned?

Yep, that seems to work alright, thanks.
