authenticated users

What are these authenticated users for? I see them in the GPMC as the
default person for applied GPO. I was just wondering what is the
importance of the group authenticated users?

Authenticated users is any user who has logged onto the domain. By
configuring permissions for authenticated users you are ensuring that only
valid users can access a resource.

It's better then using the everyone group because it means that people ARE
domain members (or members of a trusted domain) and have authenticated.
