Auotmatic updates xp

When I set windows to do the automatic updates in the back ground it does
not work and the service is running.
Any ideas?
 
Do you have a continuous Internet connection (DSL, cable
modem, etc.)? If not, you may need to configure Internet
Explorer to automatically dial when a connection is needed.

Click Tools | Internet Options | Connections, then choose
from two possible settings.
