Audio Problems - tunnel sound

Not sure if this is the right group....

There is something wrong with the audio on my computer. Probably
something I am not doing correctly. When I play a CD or an MP3, the
voices do not come through. It sounds like it's in a tunnel being
played from far away. I have to have the volume turned all the way up
to even hear anything, which causes the speakers to hiss. The audio
from various games does not sound weird, like the songs do, but
still...volume must be at maximum level.

This is what I've got:

Speakers: Accent Audio X3 (yes, it is all plugged in correctly - I
followed the instructions)

And then there is the Realtek High Definition Audio Manager

In the Device Manager for audio controllers, all of the devices say
they are working properly.

I'm not sure what to check. Can someone advise?

Assuming Windows Media Player, remember that there's also a volume control
within it too, so you may have to slide that up to maximum.

Also have a look at the volume settings in

Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Volume (tab)
(including the 'Advanced' button settings)

Yeah, I've done that. I've changed the volume control in the
control panel. I've changed in Media Player too. Still no joy. You
know....it really shouldn't be this hard. sigh....

You could try working through the Help & Support's sound
troubleshooter.....

Start > Run > hcp://help/tshoot/tssound.htm

Yeah, you're right. It's usually alot simpler to get your sound working.

Perhaps you aren't plugged into the correct PC/soundcard jack!

I thought of that. I tried all the jacks available. No joy. But
here's a question for you - or anyone reading this.... The color of
the plug from the speaker is a dark green. Not one of the jacks on the
computer is that color. I don't know why that would make a difference,
but maybe it does. I don't know. The color of the jack I'm plugged
into now is a pale green. The words on it match what the instructions
say. (And no, I don't remember what it is exactly - I'm at work right
now, not at home.)

And yes, I did go through the troubleshooting guide. The end result of
that was the message that I need to contact someone else.

Then only other thing I can think of is that these are powered
speaker(self amplifying) and you have a power problem, or they aren't
working.

You could try the speakers out on another machine, if possible, or another
set of speakers on the same machine.

Also sounds levels can vary from track to track, depending on the quality of
recording eg whether they are self-created tracks / commercially bought ones
/ downloaded etc.
