I need to point the audio setup at a specific bit of software, rather
than an installed sound card.

(Sounds and Audio/Audio/Default Device)

Normally it's an option that gets selected via the GUI.
However, while I can set the default device to the bit of s/w I want,
that is only after it loads on startup, which is too late for it to be
selected automatically, and I have to go to control panel and do it
manually.

Is there some command line I can use, for example, something like:
"set Sounds and Audio/Audio/Default Device = mySoftware"?

instead of what appears at present
"Sounds and Audio/Audio/Default Device == RealTek Audio output"

Part way there.
control mmsys.cpl,,2 will take me to the Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio
tab - now, how do I set the fields in that tab?

It should be the third "tab" along the top [of mmsys.cpl] then simply select the
preferred "Sound playback - default device" and "Sound recording - default device"

You can also "checkmark" the box at the bottom of the same "page" named "Use only
default devices", which will ensure that only the ones you picked will be used by any
other installed software that requires the use of sound playback /recording.

I read through the threads on the page your link sent me to; they are all talking
about the need to change the default sound device.

From what you have said, this is not your problem. You say your system sometimes
chooses a different device than the one you want.

If you *always* want the device you specify to be chosen by "default", then you don't
need a script to change between them - you just need to define the one you want as
the default device in mmsys.cpl,,2 (playback / recording) and to only to use
specified default devices (check the checkbox)...
