Audio CD to ATRAC ?

I bought an mp3 player yesterday and have been trying out ATRAC recordings.
The software that came with it, SonicStage is, to put it mildly, absolute
crap. After spending AGES trying to figure it out, i then pressed 'create
atrac cd' and it got to 90% and fails with EVERY CD !!!. Both burners do the
same, and it's not the burners as they're fine with NERO. Anyway one of them
is a Sony CDRW drive !!!!!!!!

To cut a long story short, is there another way of getting an Audio CD to
ATRAC without having to use Sonic ?

I have a Sony portable CD player and I have never used the ALTRAC
format. I am curious why you would bother using. ALTRAC is a Sony
proprietary format, IIRC. You will have trouble finding software
outside of Sony.

Dumb question. Have you contacted their support? Check forums? You
may be able to get some help there. I refuse to use it. MP3 works for
me .

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) Ken Kutaragi has
stated that Sony has missed out on the sales of MP3 players and other
gadgets by sticking to proprietary formats such as ATRAC. ATRAC
(Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding) is a psychoacoustic audio coding
and compression system used exclusively by Sony in, for example,
MiniDisc devices and Sony Connect online music store.

According to Kutaragi he and other Sony employees have been frustrated
with the company's reluctance to release products that support the more
popular MP3 format, such as the Apple iPod. The reason for the
reluctance was mostly because Sony, which is also a major player in the
music and movie industry, has had concerns about content rights.

The tables are slowly turning at Sony, and Kutaragi sees that new
devices, such as the PlayStation Portable (PSP) will help Sony to reach
levels of success it enjoyed in the past with Walkman and other
innovative products.

Sony is boosting production to one million a month this spring to keep
up with demand for the PSP. The device has sold over 800,000 units in
Japan since going on sale December 12th. US and European launches are
set for this spring.

I figure you've got a NW-HD1, and as far as I'm aware you're pretty much
stuck with Sonic. Sonic sucks, there's no two ways about it. Nice player,
shabby software. Get in touch with a Sony Centre near you and ask if
they'll
upgrade your ATRAC-only player to MP3 (it's a firmware update and will
cost you about £15). I had a HD1 until about, oh, three days ago and had
the firmware upgraded to support MP3. All of my similar-sounding problems
went out the window after that. (Now I've got a nice, red HD3 and it gives
me wood. Serious wood. Mahogany.)

Again, as I stated in another thread, this is a bad idea. ATRAC and MP3
are both lossy compression formats, meaning that data is lost in the
conversion from the initial source. If you convert MP3s to ATRAC, you
get all the artifacts introduced in the conversion from the original CD
to MP3, plus an additional helping of sonic crud in the translation from
MP3 to ATRAC. If at all possible, go back to the original CD and encode
from there. It might be a little more work, but it will pay off every
time you listen to your music.

My CD Walkman (XP-ZV616), isn't listed there and so i cannot proceed with
the download of vers 2.3.

So why are you stating it again if you already stated it in another
thread?

I do make a point of trying never to write anything in a new post that
I've already written ever in a previous post in any newsgroup - or even
to use any of the same words. However, I thought perhaps someone
might be reading this thread who hadn't seen the other one, and in my
humble opinion the point I was making was important enough to be
reiterated and embellished a bit.

Mel, thanks for the advice, but i have downloaded the file
SMFCUSETUP09152.EXE and ran it. I get some .OMA files. I try to burn with
Nero, but it is not recognised in my ATRAC CD player. I burned it as a 'Data
CD' in Nero, firstly the files on their own - didn't work. Then i put the
files in a folder anfd burned it - still no luck.

The .OMA files i get, how do i burn them in Nero ?
