Hello, been very busy = Hospital visits, so late doing the iso to CD.
When completed, (all very easy thanks to Susan's tip of utorrent)
I noticed the .php files on my CD had become associated with a copy of
'Printmaster' which my neice bought me for Xmas.
Now, I'm not too clear on how to change the files, or, what to make
them 'open with'...? I have copied the CD files to my HD and I need
someone to advise on the appropriate 'file association' to be able to
read the .php files. I can then re-copy to another CD.
I would be willing to help with posting CDs in the UK if I can get the
..php problem sorted. Any advice very appreciated but....KISS please.
thanks, and a belated 'Merry Xmas' to all

The files are plain Jane HTML so should be associated with your web browser
of choice (i.e. Internet Explorer)

Thanks for the very quick reply Steven!
I use Firefox, and try as I can, I cannot get my machine to accept
this as the 'associate with' file for these files....?

Maybe right click and then "Open With ... " will do it?

Hello,
Look, I don't mind sensible and polite replies mate.
I may be wrong, but yours appears to be trying to be clever, or, even
funny? All I am saying is that I can't get my system to accept what
you smartly contributed. So, if you can give me a sensible/serious
reply with help or advice on how to get my system to accept 'Firefox'
as the programme to accept these files, then thank you,
otherwise...well....

Hi Allen,

I had Printmaster installed and it did the same thing to me. The memory
had faded. . . Try opening index.html - it's in the root directory on
the CD and should open automatically when you insert the CD (if you
allow autorun). IIRC you can access the .php pages in Firefox without
any problem - opening the .html page first avoids the "open with"
nuisance. . .

OR. . .

Grab a copy of the substitute pages (.htm) that I made for IE.
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/2006-CD-IE_pages.zip (182 KB)

info here tells you what to do with them once you have them:
http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/KnownErrors

bonus: you'll get a good copy of the Cumulative PL page - the page on
the ISO is missing the table (my bad). :(

Hi Allen, I was trying to help. Honest!

ISTR that .php is not associated on XP as a default so if you want to
force it to Firefox then the simplest way is "Open With ..." and
select Firefox (or go to Program Files then Mozilla Firefox then
firefox.exe).

Or drag the PHP file onto an open windows in Firefox.

But in general you would not want to open a .php file with a browser
anyway, so maybe best to go with what Susan has posted to you.

------------------------

PS: If you want to remove the association of PHP files with
Printmaster then go to Win Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File
Types > PHP. XP is very unfriendly at this point and the bottom
button may be called Advanced or Restore. Restore is your best bet
but unfortunately it may restore you to no association at all if that
is what you started with before Printmaster was installed.
Alternatively, you can use Change and put your chosen program
(Firefox?) in there. As before, watch out because opening a PHP file
with Firefox may be unproductive.

All I am saying is that I can't get my system to accept what
you smartly contributed.

Try these steps

1 - Right click on a php file.
2 - Select "Open with"
3 - Make sure that the "Always use this program to open this file" box
is checked.
4 - Select Firefox if it is in the list
If Firefox is not in the list, click on the "Other" button
Browse to the folder that Firefox is located in.
Click on firefox.exe and click "Open"
5 - Click on the "OK" button

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments & Advice.
Having tried them all, and still having problems, I changed the .php
files to .html and they open.
However, I am going to try Susan's suggestions.
Sorry Franklin, I snapped, that's not my way, I apologise mate.
Thanks again everyone

Thank you Susan, did as above and now thw files can be opened.
My personal praise and very grateful thanks to you, and the others who
helped with the 2006 CD production. Very well done!
Now, I would like to help, how can I help with any UK distribution?
Do I have to simply copy the 'renewed/amended' version onto a CD then
run off copies? If so I am ready to help....
Thank you once again!

Hi Allen,

I'm very glad to hear that. :)

Now, I would like to help, how can I help with any UK distribution?

Would you like to be listed on the CD page as a volunteer burner for the
UK? (Another possibility would be for you to contact "Rincewind" (he's
in England) and offer to assist him behind the scenes.)

I suggest you stick with copies made from the original ISO if you're
burning a CD for someone you don't know. Those recipients who need the
revised web pages (primarily those who use Internet Explorer) can
download them.

The original ISO can be verified with DVDsig - that's to protect ACF
participants (especially the volunteer burners) - if someone puts
malware on the CD and distributes it as the real thing we can prove it
isn't. That security is lost when the file is changed.

I use IE and don't seem to be having any difficulty with the original pages
on the CD. Can you be more specific? I'll see if I can duplicate the
problem.

It's with the security "fixes" to IE that came with SP2.

Yup. FWIW my impression is that the brain dead security "fix" is in the
XP registry. . .

The second problem (links that use a # sign can be opened in a separate
window but not in the same window) is more widespread. Dunno which
combinations of Windows and IE screw that up - don't really care. If IE
is broken the revised pages will fix it. . . for now - no telling what
will happen when MS comes out with their next set of "improvements". . .

I am willing to help "Rincewind" where can I get his email address?
I seem to have lost the 'contacts list' for CD mailers.

I've done the checks, everything is fine & dandy, I'm all ready to go!
I can send my email, if you need it?
Thanks for the help & advice.

Volunteer burners are listed on the CD page:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2006/2006PL-CD-about.php

Europe (England): Rincewind
mailto:P[email protected] (That link forwards the
emails to him.)

but note: *anyone* who has the CD can volunteer to fulfill a posted request.

Nope. I'll need your email address *if* you decide you'd like to be
listed on the CD page - otherwise not.
Thanks for the help & advice.

You're welcome. Thanks for volunteering. :)
