ATTN: MarianneZ and everyone else missing messages on the Microsoft webpage

John W. Vinson

I got an email that my post "Question response" got a response, but I'm not
seeing it. In fact, I'm not seeing any posts after 12/23. Did I inadvertently
add a filter to my view of the discussion group?

No, there's a problem with the Microsoft webpage.

How you'll see this response I have no idea, since you are posting only an
anonymous discussions.microsoft.com email address.

You can see posts at http://groups.google.com (use the Advanced search to
search for your name or the subject), or you can use a newsreader such as
Outlook Express or Windows Mail to view the posts on msnews.microsoft.com.

The powers that be at Microsoft have been notified of the problem but it may
be a while before it's fixed, with the holidays.

You sure about that, Arvin? Isn't it news.microsoft.com? (although I use
msnews.microsoft.com)

The news server is: new.microsoft.com

That's it, simpler, more accurate, and much, much, faster than a web
forum.

Arvin, is it in fact "new" rather than "news"? I use msnews.microsoft.com...

Yes, fat-fingered again.

Yes, you and Doug both caught that. FWIW, both

news.microsoft.com
msnews.microsoft.com

will work just fine.

Why would you choose such poorly-implemented programs as a news
reader? Those are email apps, and Usenet has a completely different
set of requirements.

I use xNews, which is a free standalone newsreader. It is vastly
superior to either of those options, as is almost any dedicated
newsreader in existence,

They're already installed for no extra cost in any Windows installation.

I use Agent myself, and I agree that OE has some major drawbacks.

There are many better newsreader applications, but every Windows machines
already has one of the apps I've mentioned on their machine. Further, in
every case, they will do the job better and faster than a web application.

And why would you think that makes them usable? IE is installed by
default on Windows and nobody with any sense at all uses that as
their default browser, right?
I use Agent myself, and I agree that OE has some major drawbacks.

The idea of combining an email client and a news reader is
fundamentally flawed, which is why Thunderbird is not one of my
recommendations for news reader.

They are *bad* implementations, just as Internet Explorer is a bad
web browser. Everyone with any sense installs a different web
browser and uses that as the default (and uses IE only in the places
where Microsoft of other ignorant website developers force you to
use it).

So, the idea that OE is a reasonable newsreader just because it
comes installed on your PC is just not a compelling argument at all.

And why would you think that makes them usable?

<shrug>

Sure. It's not a *good* newsreader. But it's a newsreader, and available.
Would you prefer that people without your expertise use the web interface, or
not come to the groups at all?

The pusher's technique: give them the first dose free then tell them where to
buy the good stuff. <g>

It doesn't take any expertise to use a good free newsreader, like
xNews.

them where to buy the good stuff. <g>

You don't need to buy anything in this case at all.
