ATTENTION!!! FLAW IN SECURITY UPDATE..Causes Network Probs

Hello,

I posted yesterday, in hopes of help, Subject "Some Files and folders are
not displayed". I just now pinpointed the culprit....Security Update
KB885250
How do I know this? Fresh install of XP PRO SP2...networked and did not have
problem until after doing an automatic update. This update installed about
35 critical and security updates. After these were installed this new
computer was experiencing the same exact problem as my other computer. I
uninstalled, one by one, each of these updates, rebooting almost everytime.
When I removed KB885250 my problem was fixed. I was able to see all my
folders and files. I went to my other computer and removed only this update
and now it is able to see all my folders and files as well.
I hope someone from Microsoft reads this or someone who knows how to inform
them of this problem. I now have to go w/o this security update in order for
Networking to work. Again, below is the exact problem I was having :

OK...how to describe....All my music is on computer 1 in My Documents\My
Music\
I set My Documents to be shared. On computer 2 I see this and I am able to
see all my sub folders in my music collection (each folder by artist name).
Now in each artists folder are other folders for album name so...My
Documents\My Music\OzzyOsbourne\No More Tears

Most of these artist folders have multiple album folders in them....

So... I can see all the artists folders but when I go into them some of the
album folders are not showing...in some none are....also the albums I can
see
and go into some of the mp3 or wma files are not showing up...some do, some
don't.
Even if I hover over a folder that I know has multiple subfolders and files
bubble says "Folder is empty". Computer 1 shows 70GB in My Doc
properties....on computer 2 using network it shows only 47GB.
I have checked the properties of the files/folders on computer 1 to see if
there is any difference between two of them...one that shows and one that
does not and there is no difference. I have tried setting the My Music as
shared and the same thing happens. I have mapped both folders...same
thing...have shared then unshared and shared again to no effect. I tried
turning off simple file sharing and then setting permissions to allow all
and
still same. I have unchecked Read only on My Doc folder and tell it to apply
to all sub..no effect and when I look again it is checked Read Only again. I
have tried moving the folder to a different location..can u guess? No
effect.
Please help

No, they are not hidden. Now something new to add....added computer 3 to
network. I am able to see all folders and files so now I have to believe
that the problem/setting has to do with computer 2..my laptop. It is the one
that is only seeing some of these files and folders. Is there a setting
somewhere I should check on it?
Thanks for any help.

UGH!!! Computer 3 now does same thing after updating. I had a clean install
of XP SP2 and just now downloaded a bunch of critical updates and now it is
doing the same thing as laptop! Microsoft...what are you doing to our
computers????? Will try and see what each update was for and see if I can
pinpoint the exact one..wish me luck.
Would still appreciate some help if someone knows the cause.

I found the problem...Microsoft Security Update KB885250......
I uninstalled one by one every update the newly set up computer had just
downloaded and after having to reboot almost everytime..after I uninstalled
the above mentioned update I was able to see all my folders and files. I
then went to my laptop and removed only that update and it is now working!!
I am posting a new thread in hopes that a Microsoft Tech or someone who
knows how to inform Microsoft of this will see.

I should also add that besides not being able to see these folders and files
through Network Neighborhood...all my media players (ITunes, Windows Media
Player, etc.) were unable to find these files as well. Only about half my
music would show up in their libraries.
Now...all my music is accessible on all Networked computers.

I was a bit leary in obtaining this hotfix because the information and
causes listed on the link you provided do not match my problem. This hotfix
is listed as:
You cannot save a file from your Windows XP-based or Windows 2000-based
computer to a shared folder on a file server
SYMPTOMS
If you try to save a file to a shared folder on a Microsoft Windows
98-based, a Microsoft Windows 95-based, or an OS/2-based file server, you
receive the following error message:
The folder folder name isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an
unavailable location, protected with a password, or the filename contains a
/ or \

I mentioned nothing about not being able to save files. I am unable to see
or access some folders and files in a Shared folder.
I went ahead and contacted Microsoft and obtained this hotfix anyway to give
it a shot. It did not solve the issue. At this point Microsoft wanted me to
obtain Paid For services. Pay for what? I found a flaw and fixed my problem
by removing this security update. It should be up to them to research it and
fix it...not charge me for bringing it to their attention.

I should also mention....on both computers with the security update
installed...the same exact folders and files are not shown. After
uninstalling and reinstalling update...same folders and files missing.....
So, to make it maybe more clear, I have Folder \Madonna
I can see it, I open it and there should be 5 more folders but I only see
2...the other 3 do not show. Same 3 as on other computer. Why after security
update would these 3 folders not be shown? They are in same Parent folder
where 2 others do show. All Sharing and file attributes the same. Very
strange I would say.
