Attempt to activate XP Pro fails with Out of Box Experience quit

Recently upgraded from Home to Pro. When attempting to activate I get a
problem with Out of Box Experience having to quit (send error report type
failure).

I know I can activate over the phone, but given the other post-upgrade
problems I'm having I would like to find out why this is failing.

After "send error report" there is no feedback given on what the problem
might have been.

Hi

What do you see if you enter the following from Start>Run:

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

Exact same failure (e.g. Out of Box Experience encountered a problem.....).
Again, after Send Error Report no further explanation available.

Hi

Try entering the following commands from Start/Run
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll

regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll

then try

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

again to see if there is any difference.

Hi Will
Try entering the following commands from Start/Run
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll

regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll

Both showed as successful.
then try

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

Exact same failure

Let me list all the things that are still problems post-pro upgrade to see
if you can see a pattern between the activate problem and the other problems
still unresolved.

1) Start>Help and Support doesn't display any content
2) Palm Desktop fails after start with an indication that there is a file
suffix/application connection problem (running current version)
3) A little game called Jewel Quest gets to the game shell but nothing
beyond that occurs
4) Every so often the icons on the desktop (and the file/folder list in an
open window) flash like they are being refreshed.
5) Boot up time is considerable longer than with Home. It appears to be
occurring as it works its way through the network hardware and startup.

Why don't you start over with a clean install. Upgrades can work fine, but
when they don't, and that can be for many reasons, then the easiest way to
get back to a smoothly running system is to do a clean install. How long
have you been fighting with these problems post upgrade?

I did the upgrade less than a week ago.

So, can I actually go back to a clean install without risking more problems?
The CD I bought is an upgrade CD. Can I use it for a new install?

I still wonder if there isn't something fairly simple causing all the
problems. I can live without the game (Jewel Qwest). But without Palm
working and without Start>Help working, I'm a bit tied up, particularly with
the Palm stuff. All my calendar, tasks and addresses are there. I do have a
post at a couple Palm sites to see if anyone there might have seen the Palm
problem before.

I guess I could migrate all the Palm stuff over to Outlook and buy a conduit
that supports it, but I'd rather not until another week or so goes by. I do
have a working version on my Mac desktop so nothing's lost, but...

Yes an upgrade version of XP can do a clean install. It will ask you to
insert the CD for the qualifying media at some point early in the
installation process. It checks that the CD is for a qualifying product,
then it will allow a clean install.

Sorry, I don't have any resolution for the issues you're currently facing.

Thanks. If a pattern doesn't show up or if I can get some forum help that
has seen this before in a couple weeks or so, I'll go back and do that. My
next thought is to create a new user profile and eliminate that as a variable.

No apology necessary. This one may take a little time to figure out.

I'm grateful for the time you took.

I know this is an old thread but the mystery was cleared up and I wanted to
let you know what happened.

As a reminder, I was having problems right after an upgrade from XP Home to
XP Pro. I was getting all sorts of problems from all sorts of applications.

The problem turned out to be with IE and the upgrade.

I had installed IE7 on my XP Home system. The upgrade CD had IE6. I've
come to learn that what I should have done was uninstall IE7 and then do the
upgrade (or MSFT should have made the install "smarter" to see IE7 and not
try to install IE6 components).

The problems this causes showed up in all sorts of places including Out of
Box. Almost all HELP tools failed or gave strange results.

I ended up doing a full install which, of course, installed IE6 cleanly.
