still possible to reopen the attachment by clicking on the icon in the

Where did you delete the attachment in the first place?

I deleted the attachment because I did not want it but omitted to delete the
e-mail on which it came.
If I can then still open the attachment from the icon on the e-mail does
this mean that the attachment file is still lurking on my hard drive?

Yes, but within your pst file (assuming a non-Exchange email account...)
