Attachments quirk

This is a recent phenomenon. Probably within the last month, every so often
I
get an email with the paperclip in the left hand column with no paperclip in
the message - no file or link or anything is attached. Anyone come across
this before?

I've seen something similar. Messages long enough they're likely to
contain attachments, but the paperclip is not visible until you hover
your cursor above the area where it normally appears. There actually
is an attachment, though.

Are you reading messages as plain text only? That will show attachments
with HTML messages.

You can do a CTRL-F3 and check the source of the message to see if there is
in fact some sort of attachment also.

I have seen this behavior when the sender used Outlook.
Outlook's proprietary attachment encoding cannot be decoded
by Windows Mail.
