Attachments open in read only and in reading layout

Using outlook 2003 and when I open a ms word attachment the file opens up in
reading layout and read only. How to I fix this?
 
G'Day Team,

It is Read Only in the sense that you cannot replace the attachment
with an edited version - however, you can still edit and 'Save As'....

In Word:
Tools>Options
'General' (tab)
'Allow starting in Reading Layout' UNcheck the box.
