can any one explain why after attaching a 2mb file mail when sent shows as a
~4mb email, this happens on my emails even if there is no text in the body of
the e-mail?

Email was originally designed for 7-bit ASCII characters only, while binary files
use 8-bit bytes. For that reason, binary file attachments require encoding.
The overhead inherent in the encoding process causes the attachment size to
increase, although typically not by more than 33%.
