attaching zipped file

Until yesterday I could attach a zipped file to an outgoing email. Since downloading the latest Microsoft security updates I'm unable to attach them. I click insert attachment, then double click the zipped file but nothing happens.

Just browsing through the messages I came upon this one
and thought "Uh oh... I'd better check this out". Sure
enough, I have the same problem with Outlook XP (2003).
This must be an "improvement" that was added with my
installation of the dreaded SP3, which happened
yesterday. This INFURIATES me! Why didn't MS inform us
that this would be a consequence of SP3? I'm all for
security, but I'm a grownup and know what to do with Zip
files, both incoming and outgoing. This is a disaster!

After a few tests here's what I've found: I cannot create
a new email message in Outlook 2002 and then click the
paperclip icon (to insert a file) and select a zip file
as an attachment. I mean, I CAN do that, but once the zip
file is selected, pressing Insert does nothing. I have to
cancel out of the Insert File dialog box.

However, I can send a zip file the going through the back
door: Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and
find the zip file you want to email. Right-click on that
file and Select Send TO>Mail recipient. A new email
message will be created with the zip file already in the
attachment area, and the words "Emailing: <filename>.zip"
in the subject line, plus the words "Your files are
attached and ready to send with this message." written in
the body of the message. So, you have to correct or
change the subject line and the message text... but at
least you can send the darn file.

What a major pain in the butt this is... I am STILL
infuriated by this change, and especially by the lack of
warning about it from MS.

You can also open up windows explorer, navigate to the
directory where the zip file lives. Then by dragging and
dropping the zip file onto the header of the email
message, the zip file should appear in the attachment
line.

I have found this to be a better way then sending to
email receiptant
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip. However this really only helps people
who use Outlook and Explorer (and other programs) in
windows that are NOT maximized, and can overlap each
other, thus allowing you to drag from one window to the
other. Although that's a basic feature of the OS, I have
always hated that and prefer my windows to all be
maximized. I really don't want to change the way I work
just to accommodate "improvements" that I didn't ask for
and which MS never warned me about. But for those who do
work that way, your tip is most helpful.

I don't think anything has changed with .zip files. I have OL 2002 with SP3
installed and .zip files work just fine. You didn't customize the
Level1Remove registry entry, did you?

I think if you Google you'll see it's a problem with all versions of outlook
and certain versions of windows where compressed folders are used. If it was
because of SP3, the button would be dead for all file types.

This article:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Applications/MS_Office/Outlook/Q_20852017.html

is from 1/15/2004 - 2 months before SP3 and the poster has the same problem.
The version of outlook isn't mentioned, neither is a cause or fix.

Ah, I finally found a solution on Google, in a post made last fall:

"Found that this problem (on XP) was caused by the file extension .zip
not being registered - for some reason this makes Outlook think it's a
folder and ignore it."

Makes sense, as zip open as folders so if the registration is messed up,
outlook thinks it's a folder.

I'm sorry, but both Sue and Diane have lost me.

Up to the day I installed SP3, I had absilutely NO
trouble inserting a zip file into an Outlook message
just as I can insert docs or txt files or jpgs.

Since SP3, I have to use the back door method described
above.

So please Sue, can you clarify what you mean by did I
"customize the Level1Remove registry entry" because
I certainly did not registry editing (for this, at least)
and don't know what would need to be looked at to
verify the correct setting.

And Diane, can you give us the URL that you found
through Google that explains the solution? You said
you found it... you just didn't tell us what it is.

Thanks,
carabalda

If by "not being registered" you mean that the .zip
file extension is not associated with a program, when
I go into Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options >
File Types I see that ZIP files are set to Open with
WinZip, as has always been the case. There's no reason
why Outlook should "think" a .zip file is a folder, or
to ignore it as it's doing now when I try to attach.

More info?

In your case, it sounds like the registry is corrupt, as you should not have
the problem if you use WinZip. Compressed folders is the culprit and
installing winzip or another zip program should take care of it.

To disable the compressed folder feature click on Start -> Run and enter the
following command:
regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

To enable ZIP folder support run this command:

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Well, here's what I did:

1 - ran regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll to diable compressed
folders (although I don't believe I was ever using them)
2 - restarted WIN XP
3 - created a test Outlook message and tried to attach
a zip file. It worked, although the icon for the
attachment was changed from usual WinZip "yellow folder
with a vise clamped around" it to something else
reprsenting a "cpmpressed folder". When I right-clicked
this test zip file and selected "open", a new Windows
Explorer window opened and I could see the files inside
it... in other words, the file was no longer being
opened by WinZip as it would have been previosly
4 - sent myself the test message with zip attachment - no
problem.
5 - ran regsvr32 zipfldr.dll to re-enable compressed
folders
6 - restarted WIN XP
7 - creates another test Outlook message with zip
attachment. This also worked as expected, and the file
icons remained as they were for the previous test.
8 - sent myself the test message with zip attachment - no
problem.
9 - started WinZip. It immediately notified me that "to
work most effectively" or something like that, that it
needed to register certain file types. I allowed it to
do that.
10 - went back to Windows Explorer and found a zip file,
which once again showed the traditional WinZip icon
with the vise. When I right-clicked this and selected
"Open", the file was once again opened into WinZip rather
than into an Explorer window.
11 - one last test of creating an Outlook message and
attaching a zip file worked as it had always done before
the SP3 update... so I guess all is back to normal.

Thanks for the tips... I'm still not quite sure exactly
what got corrupted, but the above steps seem to have
fixed it for me.

In Windows XP, that's the default association.
