Attaching Files to mail contacts

I am having difficulty sending out an 8 page Newsletter
to the members of our running club. The file is a word
doc. converted and compressed into an Adobe pdf file.

I start my new message, insert the contact list, click
on attach, then browse, when file comes up I say ok, then
I'm returned to the message and "attach" is highlighted
in blue but not the file.
What am I doing wrong? Is it possible that I NEED AN ANTI-
VIRUS PROGRAM IN MY COMPUTER IN ORDER TO SEND?

Pls help!
 
Are you clicking on the file itself to attach it to your email message.
Just highlighting the file won't attach it to your message.
