Not going thru all that just to get a bootable
removeable drive.

Let's try one other thing. I have a spare 30 gig
drive that I could place on the system as a second
drive, format it, and make it bootable. But the next
problem arises. Maxtor wants to copy files to it but...
is it making a copy of the whole system drive? It does
make a difference trying to get a 120 gig drive even tho
only 20 gig is in use.

So how bout this, after getting the 30 gig drive formatted
and set to boot, suppose I just shut the system down, remove
maxtor install cd, reboot the system with my original drive,
and then run MS backup to restore the files from the saved
backup. I assume that backup only copies current folders and
not the complete drive. If that's the case, this should work or
does the new 30 gig drive need some other files.

Also, please note, that Maxtor install disk had a wierd effect
on my system. When I took all that crap off and rebooted, the
system said I might have a bootlegged copy of Windows. At the
same time, Windows was downloading an update to check for illegal
Windows software. After it installed and rebooted, the message about
being an illegal copy of Windows had disappeard.

TIA John

I had no idea. I had to search Google Groups for the OP's name to find out.
