ATI X1600XT with Linux RH 4 Enterprise

S

spinlock

First, I am a newbie that can't even spell Linux, so, please type slow.

I have a dual-boot RH 4 Enterprise edition installed on an x86 mobo with
an ATI X1600XT AGP adapter. The monitor is a Sony 24" LCD that looks
crappy with any res but the native 1920x1200.

The generic vid driver that installed with the system maxes out at
1600x1200. When I install the latest driver(8.28.8) from ATI, I can run
1920x1200, but
windows are not refreshed properly. Even system windows like the
Logoff/Restart/Shutdown
window does not display, so, I do NOT THINK IT IS AN XFREE86 ISSUE.

Basically, when I move a window, it disappears as I move it. I can get it to
refresh by clicking the mouse all over the area that I moved it to and it
slowly refreshes the area around
each click!?!?!?! Even when I select restart system, the window does not
even appear, a greyed area in the center
shows up, as I move the mouse around that area, "Logoff", "Reboot", "OK",
selections appear?!?!?!?

As anyone seen this? Are there patches for OS? Patches/new driver for ATI?

thanks,

That sounds strange. On FC5 in the display-setting menu I can choose the
resolution (Settings) and the hardware. For the later I picked "Generic
LCD-display -> LCD Panel 1920-1200" since it doesn't know my Samsung
monitor. Now I can also pick the native resolution I want.

If that doesn't work, you can try editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf by hand. At
least it is by worth trying... (you might wont to change the default
runlevel in /etc/inittab to 3 so you can undo the changes more easily if
necessary)

Good luck!

This can be confusing. For instance, I have a Viewsonic 1912wb which
likes the unusual resolution of 1440x900. Upon installation of FC5 I
was given something less, and something quite unsatisfactory. I noticed
that my monitor was not listed, however I was able to substitute
"generic lcd" in the 'display settings'.

In the KDE control center I did not find 1440x900. Frankly, I do not
know the relationship between the KDE Control Center 'display' box, and
the FC5 'display setting' control.

In any case, I edited my xorg file adding 1440x900. For good measure I
downloaded the latest and greatest nVidia 3D drivers. After rebooting
the system (the changes did not happen until an actual reboot) my KDE
control center now tells me that I have 1440x900. I also have 3D.

Like you I have no idea about ATI. However, if I were the original
poster I would check the xorg file and make sure his higher resolution
is listed.
