2560x1600 under Windows XP with X1650 Pro

I have a Dell 3008 WFP 30" screen that can display 2560x1600, and an
Ultimate Sapphire X1650 Pro. That combination works nicely under
Linux with the free X drivers with the full resolution.

Under Windows XP with Catalyst 8.8 (as well as with the driver
supplied with the card) I can set the resolution to 2560x1600 (as well
as lots of other resolutions), but what I get with any resolution
beyond 1920x1200 is this: the screen shows only a 1920x1200 display
that is a peephole into the full-resolution (e.g., 2560x1600) frame,
and I can pan that peephole around using the mouse.

Now I would like to get the full resolution even under Windows. How
can I do that? Thanks in advance.

BTW, before I got the X1650 Pro, I used a Connect3D X850XT, which
showed the same behaviour under Windows, but did not give me 2560x1600
under Linux (IIRC the best I could get was 1920x1200). I completely
(I hope) deinstalled and reinstalled the ATI drivers in order to
cleanse the system of any remnants of the X850XT (and its
restrictions), but that did not change anything.

You could try changing "Color quality" to Medium(16bit) there is also
a new Catalyst 8.10 on the ATI site.

Tried both, same result.

BTW, the monitor driver seems to work all right: I tried an Asus
8600EN card instead of the x1650 Pro, and it gave me 2560x1600 under
Windows (but with the free nv driver not under Linux, so this card is
not the answer to my problem).

It is always possible that XP has lost the association of the monitor driver
to your video card.
In device manager, double click on the monitor listing and uninstall the
monitor driver, then reinstall it.
Always reinstall the monitor driver after a video card change or driver
change.

Tried that now, no improvement.

Same with Catalyst 8.10 and 8.11.

The solution was that I tried a Radeon 4650 that I borrowed from a
friend. With that I got 2560x1600 under Windows (although the display
was corrupted when first switching to that resolution; after resetting
and rebooting the computer it worked).

After doing my testing with that card I put in the X1650Pro again; in
both directions I just changed the hardware and did not do anything
with the drivers; the X1650Pro came up with 1920x1200, even though I
had not switched back from 2560x1600 before switching the cards.
Supreme Commander ran with the truee 2560x1600 (no peephole) I had
last used on the 4650. And then I also switched the desktop
resolution to 2560x1600, and it worked, too.

My guess is that the driver used with the X850XT left some registry
setting that did not go away even through deinstallations and
reinstallations of drivers, nor with driver upgrades. I also guess
that that setting did not make sense with the 4650, so the driver (or
CCC) threw it out, and now that setting does not affect the X1650Pro
any more. I guess the classical cureall of reinstalling Windows might
also have helped; or better: let an expert have a go at the registry.

BTW, the 4650 is incredibly power-efficient. In my usage, it used
about 10W (Windows idle) to 30W (Windows gaming) less than the 1650Pro
(which in turn consumes 3W (idle) to 35W (Windows gaming) less than
the X850XT.
