ATI AIW 8500DV compatibility?? problems

Dick Sidbury

I'm having problems with one of my systems at home.

It has an AMD Athlon 1700+ on a Shuttle AK31 mobo (with VIA 266A
chipset). ATI AIW 8500DV, Audigy (I) platinum, 4 256meg PC2100 chips,
Promise FasTrak100 TX4, some generic ethernet card (maybe kingston), a
USB 2.0 card, WinXP Pro + SP1 + all the security updates..., DirectX
8.1, IE 6.0, WMP 8.0.

Anyhow, the Audigy drivers are up-to-date as of two weeks ago.
However the ATI software is what came with the card which I think is
mmc 7.7 with the exception of 2.2 software for the remote. Anyhow
when I install the latest ATI software and direct X 9 the tv tuner
ceases to work and the newer software doesn't install the dvd player.

It more or less works ok when watching or recording TV but I have the
feeling that I could get better performance if I could make it work
with directx 9 and current drivers.

Any suggestions?

Dick:

I have the same video card - no problems with Direct X 9b. I also could not
update software beyond Catalyst 2.5. It seems that our installation CD
(with MMC 7.7.0.0) does not include a separate DVD player/decoder, so we
can't update MMC which in turn causes problems with updated drivers. The
only solution seems to be purchasing a newer installation CD from ATI - I
have ordered the one with MMC 8.1, which I hope <g> will allow me to upgrade
to the latest drivers/MMC software since it contains a separate DVD
player/decoder. HTH.

And this is why ATi needs to step up to the plate and either:
A)Provide a free upgrade MMC,
B)Make their newer drivers compatible with 7.7.0.0!!
or
C)Provide us an alternative software package.

I bitched to them, and they send me a recent cd with mmc 8.something, the
reason for my rant to them was that when reinstalling MMC and the dvd5
player, the driver cd that it came with was having the glitch of not
recognizing the cd to authenticate the install of dvd 5, an issue they
resolved in later versions of the driver disk. I pointed out their 5 yr
agreement of an unparalleled commitment to the best support as is on the
box, and that I was not willing to age any more going between downloaded
and cd drivers to complete a glitch free installation, I demanded an all
in one solution CD.

Anyway... my experience is that CAT 3.10 and MMC 8.6 is a stable combo.
Any MMC's above that were flaky for me, and I havent tried any of the 2
newer release drivers.

Gordon:

To whom did you bitch? I just agreed to let them charge me $19.99 ($9.99
for the CD and $10.00 S/H!!) to obtain what you apparently received for
free. I'd like to contact whomever you dealt with and get my money back.
TIA.

Also, thank you for your opinion on Driver/MMC combo. And belated thanks to
the other two users who posted their opinions.
