Old technology now, but can anyone comment on the viability of plugging an
Athlon XP2500+ Mobile into my Soltek SL75-DRV5 motherboard.
The processor is "AXMH2500FQQ4C". A 1867 MHz (266 MHz FSB) with core voltage
= 1.45V. It is a Barton.

I am currently running a desktop XP 2400+ thoroughbred (normally clocked at
15x133MHz, but undervolted) with a zalman cooler and the whole system runs
silently. I would like a little more power, but want the system to continue
to run silently and I have practically no cash to spend. I found the above
CPU second hand and I know these mobile processors run cooler, so I might be
able to overclock it and gain more speed without adding noise...

The motherboard clearly supports 266fsb, but I seem to remember that it
cannot support Barton chips. I seem to recall that the reason for not
supporting Barton was their FSB of 333, however I may have remembered that
wrongly!.

Any thoughts/experience from anyone on why this upgrade might not work?
Also, anyone know where Soltek went? Can't find a website for them -
www.soltek.com.tw doesn't open!!

it says you need to set the voltage to 1.85 for the mobile cpu.

Personally I would have spent the money on a new cpu/mb combo
$80 mb/AMD 64 3000 or better, probably need new memory for the combo.

No you don't "usually" have to set voltage to 1.85, BUT,
their voltage starts out lower, IIRC, around 1.5V so if one
is overclocking quite a bit it can be important that the
motherboard bios or other mod that raises the voltage, does
so before the multiplier and/or FSB changes that raise the
speed. It isn't always necessary but it wouldn't be hard
to shoot for 2.4GHz or so and find it won't post at that
with 1.5 vCore, but will closer to 1.7

1.85V is fairly high, most people trying for a quiet system
will not go that high even to overclock unless they have an
exotic (expensive) cooling solution such as very high end
air cooler, water cooling, or a very low room ambient temp
so a more modest 'sink will suffice.

One of the larger issues with mobiles is the board has to be
able to adjust the multiplier from the default (which is
around 5 or 6X, IIRC) to the desired one, just to get the
CPU running at the XP2500 spec'd speed, not even considering
overclocking. Fortunately (or really, necessarily) they
aren't multiplier locked as their contemporary non-mobile
alternatives were.

I don't know if OP's board will run a Barton though, I
suspect so as most will, but how much it'll overclock in a
particular board is another variable. I tend to agree that
it may not be worth the money to upgrade a XP2400 now,
instead of eventually replacing the motherboard, CPU, and
other parts together for a newer platform. XP2400 is
plenty fast enough for common tasks but to get substantial
benefit it will take a different CPU architecture or at
least a board that can run the FSB and memory very high (but
synchronously, which requires high-grade memory and we
haven't any data on this).

Ease up on the voltage there. First of all, the coding for the
VID pins is different between mobile and desktop chips. Your
chip is coded for 1.45V, but a slightly higher voltage will
appear in the BIOS screen. I have a mobile and when the VID
code is interpreted by my desktop board, it reads as 1.57V.
The fab51 website has a table that compares the VID coding
values for mobiles versus desktop chips.

My Mobile will not POST if I raise the voltage much above
1.7 volts. I run mine regularly at 2200MHz at 1.65 volts
and it is quite stable. I've tried running it at 2400 or
2500MHz, but the improvement was invisible, so I went back
to 2200MHz. As I recollect, at 100% load, it runs at a
temperature of about 43C or so, with a Zalman 7000 cooler.

For the motherboard, there would be a couple tricks. Whether
the BIOS will understand the chip can be important, whether
the motherboard is capable of running one of the AthlonXP
faster chips (the PLL filter issue), and whether the motherboard
has the ability to set the five multiplier bits. My motherboard
only sets four of the bits, so I am limited to a 12.5 multiplier,
unless I do a wire mod to set the fifth bit. There are
some motherboards that cannot set the multiplier in the BIOS.
So plenty of research to do, to get the most from your chip.

You can do lots of things with wire mods or messing with
the top of the chip, but that won't help if the motherboard
cannot handle the faster chips properly. This page will show
you how the signals on the socket can influence what the
motherboard runs at. With the multiplier setting in my BIOS
and the Vcore setting as well, I was able to do everything
necessary for my Mobile, without using the info on this page.
If I wanted a multiplier higher than 12.5, then I'd need
to add one wire to my socket. Every motherboard has its quirks.

Soltek are dead, deceased, passed away, no longer with us....

Sorry, I'm not familiar with your board. However, it would seem that Google
knows it well. Funny that!

For instance.

The mobo is based on the KT333 chipset so I would imagine that it would
handle 166Mhz FSB fine. Look around, Google is a mine of information.
