Is there a Asus board that you can start out with single access memory
channel (512MB) and then later add another 512mb and 'activate' the duel
channel?

Many of them do that. The reason this is possible, is both the
P4 and the Athlon XP and Athlon 64, have 64 bit data busses, and
a DIMM is 64 bits wide too. Unless a chipset is designed with a
reduced feature set, you should be able to get away with one DIMM.
I just checked, and even the Athlon FX can run with one registered
DIMM.

Always download and read the manual before buying, as the manual
contains the details you can count on for the motherboard.

All of the current Asus dual channel capable motherboards work that way.
BUT, you MUST use matched IDENTICAL DDR RAM sticks in order to enable the
dual channel feature. You can't use just any old RAM stick that's similiar.
In other words, you're better off buying the Matched pair at the same time;
they come matched if you request it.
