Asus A7N8X non-deluxe, AMD CPU with no fan?

Will not having a fan for even 10 seconds cause the overheating protection
to kick in? I hate removing my fan just to test another CPU, as for some
reason they put the CPU in a place that is hard to remove and replace the
fan after the motherboard has been installed in the case, especially with
IDE cables, etc...

The Reason I ask is I was testing a friends CPU, but gave up on the fan
after 30 minutes, as all I wanted to test was the CPU. And his cpu caused
the system to auto-shutdown in 3 seconds after I turned on the system.

Thanks,

Wayne

Excellent way to fry a cpu! AMD's are not known for their
resistance to heat, comes with that large L1 cache, I am afraid!

I'm not completely sure, but AFAIK, if you run an AMD cpu with no heatsink
fitted, it will destroy itself in less than a second..........

Well, it was already fried....

The fan was connected with his mobo in the case. But soon after the first
post, the temp was 87c which is way too high. But the fan was working.
Also, the keyboard wouldn't work right, it would lock up on two or three
keys being pressed, but this keyboard works great on another AMD system I
have. Then after 3 boots, nothing.... no post, etc...

Thanks,

I ran mine for about 30 seconds without the fan plugged in, I was
surprised it even ran for more then 4 seconds.

COP will shut your PC off if the CPU gets too hot, yeah I've tested it
and it works! No more worries! ;p

Not with the XP's and a mobo that can handle the overheating
protection (in theory).

Thanks Andrew. I think the CPU was bad because when I put it into the A7N8X
Deluxe version 2 Mobo, it would freeze when using the keyboard to select
options in the CMOS, or in the DOS boot disk, etc...

Thanks Ed. I really believe it was a bad CPU as it froze when only doing a
page down with the DOS diskette. Plus the temp showed as 87C and that is
almost boiling.

The fact that you consider removing and installing a CPU without removing
the motherboard from the case first indicates that you are in dire need of a
swift slap to the back of the head...

Then again if you did this kind of thing professionally then you would know
better....

LOL. Some people only learn from their mistakes, and that one would be
expensive enough so he probably wouldn't do it twice.

Naaaaaah, extracting the mobo is such a hassle with all the wires and
everything -just as likely to break something during that extended process.
Could break something learning the nack for the clip, but Ive had my
heatsink on and off oodles of times no probs without going through
the whole Mr.Pc Certified process :p

I did this, a couple of times with a 1300 tbred,Duron on a7v8x-x,
the bios heat-cop managed to save it.

Faster XP's, hotter, riskier ;]

Freezes like that cause its overclocked, too hot, too quick, or bad
timings. I havent found chips go flaky like that unless they are abused,
its an all or miniscule sort of thing if they're broken. It does sound like
you fried it now, should have run for a while without the fan, but only if
the heatsink was on flat. -watch out for putting it on the right way round,
and flat and clean in future, wrong way round it doesnt contact the cpu die
properly and can crack it :/

Live quick'n'learn fast -cpus are cheap and dont have loads of data on
them, unlike HD's - those you got to be paranoid about :]

Arctic Silver is... hmm, let me think... what is Artic Silver?

Artic Silver-5 costs 5 bucks on a good day for 2.7 grams... lets just call
it 3 grams.. it is a good day?

If you bought an ounce of Artic Silver-5 it would cost $120.00. One gallon
of Artic Silver-5 would cost $640.00. If you assume that 16oz of water =
one pound...

You could say that a 55 gallon drum of Artic Silver-5, if it even resembled
water, would cost... $35,000. It would weigh 440 pounds.

This is about correct in the weight... a 55 gallon drum of windshield washer
is less than 100 bucks.

When you think about a heatsink.... think about the word itself. The
sinking, blithering hatred of the heating. It brings death and stench. The
fan on the sink.... ohhh... that precious fan... and your nemesis.

The martini would get hotter; quicker in the hand without the fan....

Now... how hot will you find the sweltering without your sink fan? Will you
drink warm vodka and fry, or will you come to the holy land of nice sunny
days with a chance of coolness?

So fry some shit up, you dig?
