Assistance with Time Keeping Formula

I use excel to manage complicated schedules. I put the starting and ending
times in military time, and then a formula to come up with the totoal hours.
I use the following formula:

=MOD(G476-E476,1)*24

But now, for some reason, the formula works in one instance, but not in
another, and I cannot see why. Can anyone tell me what additional info I need
to make this work in any spreadsheet I use?

It's going to be pretty hard to pin down if you dont' tell what "not in
another" means - do you get an error? an erroneous result? a crash?

Can you give an instance in which the formula doesn't work? As written,
it should work for XL times.

Have you checked that all your times are indeed XL times, not text?
