assistance requested to set up peer to peer in Windows XP Pro

I need to link together two XP Pro systems to share resources.
I have gone through the setup wizard(MSHOME Work Group, etc) to no avail.
I fugure I must have left out or do not know something basic and would
appreciate any and all help.

Make sure both NICS have a green light on the back (Link light).

Also make sure the cable connecting the two NIC's is a crossover cable.

Both machines go through a DLink Switch into which is also an RJ45 Cable
to the wall jack which goes to a panel to the Internet. Both machines
can access the internet just fine.
When I click on MyNetwork Places nothing comes back. When I try to add a
printer so that the one system can use the others printer, there are no
printers found...looking further is when I realized that the network
work group really does not exist. Hence, my using the network wizard
which set up the default mshome network. However, I recall something
about XP Pro and peer to peer networks not working as in the past, but I
forgot and am not sure!

Well, I need to get back to the office, but I know I turned on File and
Printer Sharing and I believe I actually shared the entire drive!
I also took the default name--mshome, I believe in the network set up
wizard. That too I will have to check on. I did some research via Help
and will go back and see if each machine actually is part of the
workgroup. They should be.

I also found the following on the Microsoft site:

re activating peer to peer--this makes sense but...on my home network(XP
Home and 98 and MAC) it is not checked and all of our computers can
see each other and share resources. I am not sure what this would buy
me. More research is needed.
This should not be difficult...or complicated.
