assigning programs to users on standalone

kindly help me understand how to give a limited user of my standalone machine
rights to access some of my programs or files. if i use "share files," this
does not help my limited user to gain access to them. if you know of a
specific article number about how to [administer] the rights that a limited
user can get on my STANDALONE (not lanned) machine, kindly tell me what it
is.

i opened a new user account for a limited user recently, but i saw when i
did it that some of the necessary programs are missing some of the necessary
files to run them. that is especially dangerous to THIS computer because my
limited user is entirely computer illiterate and i want her to run antiviral,
adware, spyware, and firewall software when she uses her limited user
account.

i cannot see that when i run a program, for example, my antiviral, that it
also is run against the files contained inside of the limited user's
[documents] files.

how can i learn how to correctly [grant rights] of the entire hard drive
programs to a limited user, considering that i am administrator of this
standalone and that we are not on a LAN, WAN, or MAN?

i thank you very much for your input and thoughts.

sincerely, karen

Unfortunately, the ability to run programs as a limited user depends on
how the program was coded. The program may have been written for an
older MS operating system that didn't have NT permissions or be from an
arrogant company such as Intuit that refuses to change its code to meet
the higher NT security.

The problem occurs because the program needs to be able to write to an
area of the hard drive and/or the registry that is forbidden to the
Limited user. Depending on the program, you can possibly fix this by
giving specific permissions to Everyone on the related program
folder(s) and registry keys. Check with specific program mftrs. for
help with their software.

Another way to manage this is with Group Policy if you have XP Pro and
to make your users Power Users. Restrict their access to operating
system functions as desired. For questions about Group Policy, post in
the related newsgroup:

microsoft.public.windows.group_policy

Again, the success of this depends on the particular programs involved.
