Assigning IP address

I've manually assigned an IP address to my Windows 2000
laptop, in attempt to connect to D-Link router.

Yet when I "run cmd" and "ipconfig", I get the message:
"Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Media State :
Cable Disconnected", rather than getting the usual
display of proper IP addresses.

Looks like Windows is not setting the IP address I'm
telling it to.

I'm lost. Any ideas?

Looks like your nic doesn't have a connection to the router. Check the nic
and check the cable.

Thanks Marina.....

You'll have to bear with me, because I'm not overly
computer literate. I've heard the expression countless
times (NIC card) but not really sure what it is.

The laptop is wireless (no cable). I have a Cisco card
which has always talked to the router, but with this IP
Address problem, there is no talking going on.

router. Check the nic

Two things to consider in addition to what has already been posted: is
the address you want to assign within the defined range of the router?
Of course, since you have no connection, you cannot access the router to
check its settings so you may have to use another machine to do that or
use an Ethernet cable instead of your wifi to connect to the router
and check this.

Finally, have you changed the frequency settings of your router or wifi
card, have you changed the SSID (if they do not match, no connection).

Good luck

Those are both nics. They can talk to other computers through a hub/switch
or router. Are you connecting two computers directly? Make sure you use a
crossovercable.
