Assigning a template to an existing file?

Hi. I've got a bad feeling about this one.

I have a .xls file that was exported from OpenOffice. As such, it
lists no base template.

I would like to assign my normal book.xlt to the file, but it
seems excel lacks this functionality, unlike Word.

I guess if it can't be done I could copy sheet by sheet into a
new file? It happens to be a fairly complex file.

I'm in Excel '03, on Windows XP.

I'm sure I don't fully understand what you ask, but providing you have any
file in Excel as you want it, you can save the file as book.xlt in xlStart
and it will act as the template for all new workbooks...you may also need a
single-sheeted workbook called sheet.xlt in the same folder which is the
template for any sheets added to existing workbooks

Your question doesn't make a lot of sense (at least to Nick and me).

Presumably, having copied it from OO you can use it within Excel. If you
want to add macros to it now, they would just go in this new Excel workbook.
Any functionality missing? Is there something that you want to do with it
that you can't see how?

Hi Bob and Nick. Sorry for not being clear.

The new doc, which OO outputted, does not have a template it is
based on. I suppose all formatting is hard coded, with no styles
and no macros.

I want to take advantage of the styles and macros that I will
keep in the default template. Thus, I need to know how to base
this new file on an existing default template.

Probably the longhand way - copying sheet by sheet into a new
doc, is the way to go. But if there's an automatic way to do it
I'd like to know.

I know of now way to get an existing document to inherit a template style,
but presumably there are some style characteristics that you want to pick
up, font, etc. If you tell us what they are, I am sure someone will knock up
some code for you.

As for macros, you can just export the macro modules from the template, then
import them into the new workbook.

I have no styles yet, and only one macro. But I'm thinking ahead,
to when I will add organizing things to the template and will
want them automatically reflected in the file. I think I'm going
to have to copy the file over manually to a new blank file.
