Assigning a number value to text

I have a spreadsheet that has about 60 stock symbols on it, in random order. I need to be able to assign a value to each of those symbols like MSFT=25.24 so I can use that number value later for calculations. Can anyone help me with this?
 
Create a lookup table. Check VLOOKUP in help.
