Assign shortcut keys to symbols in Powerpoint

Some ability to assign shortcut keys to commonly used symbols in Powerpoint
should be added. I can select a symbol but cannot assign a shortcut for
inserting it as is possible in Word. When putting together a mathematic or
scientific presentation this is incredibly problematic and a shortcoming that
should be addressed.

Ah, but you can.

It is a bit like fooling PowerPoint into thinking you misspelled the symbol.

Insert the symbol in a textbox the old fashion way Insert => Symbol =>
navigate to it and insert it. For this example we will use the does not
equal sign that is found in the symbols font #185). Close the symbol dialog
box. Now select the symbol and then click on Tools => AutoCorrect options
=> AutoCorrect (tab). The symbol should be in the 'With:' box. Enter a
memorable and unique set of characters (that is not going to be used during
normal work flow) like "<><>" and click on add button.

You may notice that the symbol in the with box may not be the same as the
symbol you have inserted. This is because it is using a different font. If
you use the keys <><> and then change the font to symbol for that character,
you should get the desired symbol entry.

It isn't quite as easy as a symbol key, but way better than the old fashion
way.
