ASR to change hard drives

I have a windows xp pro sp2 laptop with a failing drive. I would like
to use ASR to backup the
current drive to a USB harddrive, replace the hard drive, and then
restore from the USB drive
back to the new disk.

I have not been able to find a microsoft kb arcticle on this but I feel
confident that there must be
one. Anyone have a link?

One question: since i have SP2, (my original disk are not sp2) when I
complete the above procedure, will I have SP2 again?

Thanks.

I would not use ASR for this purpose. In my opinion it is a POS. You would
do much better to look at getting a third party app. Many hard drive
manufacture's have free drive copy programs available for download. Or you
might want to try DrvClonerXP which is freeware from here

Harry,

Thanks for the info. However, I am interested in ASR at this time.

I can make a backup and floppy disk files with the backup utility but
am unsure where in the
installation process I tell it that I want to restore from a previous
backup. Can anyone point
me to a link explaining this portion?

Thanks.

Ok fair enough. Purchase a second hard drive or tape drive and direct the
ASR to back up to it. then pray it will work when you need it.
