ASR files size is too big

Twice I have had to reinstall Windows XP (my fault,
that's not what im posting about) because i haven't
created an ASR disk.

So i went online and found out how, I have followed the
instructions three times and still i go through this
scenario...
I insert a blank disk and away it goes, then it says the
tape(??) is full, so i insert another disk... it soon
fills up. It's trying to backup 3 Gig of data. I just
want an ASR disk, not a system backup.

What am I doing wrong?

The ASR disk is created as the last part of a full system backup. All it
really does is point to the backup files so they can be restored. How would
you restore the system when it crashed if you didn't have a full backup?
