ASCII to Inkjet?

E

Eric

I have two computers, running XP and Win98, connected
through a Linksys router, and printing to an Epson LQ-570
(dot matrix) through the parallel port of the XP machine.
Some of my printing is graphics, some is ASCII from DOS
applications.

I want to replace the LQ-570 with an Epsom R800 (inkjet).
Will I be able to continue printing both graphics and ASCII
text? The XP machine has USB2.0. Is it going to be a matter
of a straight installing-reconfiguring, or am I likely to
run into problems? If so, can I use Printfil, which I have
seen mentioned here several times, to do the job? (Davide
Guolo, if you read this, mi daresti il tuo consiglio?).

Thanks for any and all advice.

Eric.

If the R800 is not a Windows-only printer, you can simply redirect the LPT
port to the networked USB printer, but I think you already tried this, did
you ?

I had a look at the Epson web site for your printer:
http://www.epson.it/product/printer/inkjet/stph_r800/stph_r800.htm
Neither DOS, nor Unix/Linux is mentioned as supported OS. In addition, only
USB and firewire ports are available, so I think this is probably a Win-only
printer.

Using Printfil you can surely have your DOS jobs printed to the R800 (just
like any other Windows printer) without problems. You can try yourself by
downloading and installing the free trial.

I see you can write Italian. If you want to write me in Italian, feel free
to do it at my private e-mail address.

Kind regards,

Davide,

Thank you for the good information. Just what I needed to
know. Yes, the Epson R800 is indeed a Windows only printer.
I don't have it yet, as I have ben trying to find out if it
would work, before buying it. So I decided to go ahead and
get it, and I look forward to getting Printfil also. Again,
thanks.

Eric
