Are you sure you want to delete WINDOWS ?

Mike

I deleted a few songs from my folder and then emptyed
recylce bin. I went and did a few things and came up and
saw that there was something else in the recycle bin. So
I right clicked it and hit 'Empty Recycle Bin' and it
said 'Are you sure you want to delete WINDOWS'. This
caught my eye and as a percaution I clicked NO and set a
restore point. After that I opened the bin folder and saw
nothing. So I then tryed emptying the bin, but I got this
error: "Cannot delete Dc1: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and
that the file is not currently in use."

I dont want to delete windows and I cant get it out, do
you know how I can get it out? Thanks, and if this has
anythign to do with spyware or a virus let me know. I
will run scans anyway. I am running IE6 on Windows XP
SP2. I have zone alarm and norton system works.

BUT WAIT! As I was about to submit, I saw a bunch of
icons turn up on my desktop. Looks like spyware, I have
had zone alarm off since it was blocking something I was
doing. I will run a scan and reply with what I come up
with. Your word is appriciated.

You obviously have not been to windows update in a long, long time. There
was a patch on windows update 7 or 8 months ago that took care of this
problem. You can't actually delete windows, it was a bug that was repaired
by one of the patches.

Yeah, it's been a few years (!) but this one is till around...

...not fixed by any patches, not in the form I am getting it anyway.

I have found I can reliably reproduce this error message by deleting any entry in my "favourites" (bookmarks) in IE 7 or 8. The *correct* way to delete items from Favourites is to go to "Organise Favourites" and delete there - *not* right-click and select "delete" directly in the favourites menu.

But I have also found the way to reliably fix the issue is just to reboot. Obviously there is some error-check routine on startup that cleans up the recycler.

And now, in 2010

:user: With XP Pro SP 3, IE 8, automatic updates, strong antivirus and antimalware protection, we still have the Recycle Bin "DC1: Access Denied" error.

As the last member said, it always goes away on reboot. But it would be nice to see a real patch for this irritating bit of malfunctioning software.

Perhaps, in some far flung future decade.....

One of those things

Hah, perhaps... or not. XP's official end of life has been announced, and somehow I doubt minor (well they must consider it minor, it's ben around since at least April '07!) bugs will get any further attention.

XP retired from the price lists about a year ago (as a retail or DSP product) and as of this month is no longer shipped as OEM install or downgrade option on machines from the Name manufacturers.

RIP WinXP!

PS: I discovered that even using the "correct" procedure for deleting from favourites, I still get this error. There simply is no way to remove favourites without having to reboot to clear the trash! Perhaps I have installed some ill-behaved software but without reinstalling for the nth time - something I only do in an emergency - and then trying my patience to the extreme by installing packages one at a time and testing, I doubt I'll ever catch the rogue. Too bad, so sad, live with it!
